Cycling
The Grands itinéraires a vélo en Dordogne Périgord, are build on the european and national véloroutes networks. The European network (EuroVelo) is a network of 17 long-distance cycle routes that cross and connect Europe. The routes can be used by long-distance cycle tourists, as well as a day spend on a section. The EuroVelo (EV1) La Vélodyssée passes the coast and EuroVelo (EV3) Pilgrims Route (or La Scandibérique) is a new rendition of the medieval pelgrims route of St. James’ path to Santiago de Compostela (Saint-Jacques).
Legally the voie vertes is a dedicated and reserved for pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers, people with reduced mobility and horse riders. Prohibited to motorized traffic, it is suitable for tourist, leisure or everyday travel. While the véloroute is intended for cyclists only. That said, local alignments use almost exclusively roads that are open to cars and trucks that are nor very used to cyclists. They are sometimes very steep and dangerous. Steep inclines can ofcourse be overcome by electric bike, make sure you know how to break for the steep declines.
In our experience the Isle and Dordogne valleys are the safest and most interesting to cycle as they are serviced by dedicated voie vertes and follow former tow paths next to the river or former railways. Easily reached from Périgueux and Sarlat, where bike rentals are available. We are sorry to say that, though Terrasson is located on a junction of two long distance routes, the local alligments are not as friendly.
If you would just like to go for a little bike ride we have a suggestion based on the Boucle de la Vézère hiking trail that can be extended to include some interesting landscapes over reasonably flat terrain on our Sightseeing in and around Terrasson page.
> | Cycling | Reasonably flat and paved surfaces provided by dedicated 'voie vertes' or cycling paths | ||
> | Biking | All terrain trails often shared with hikers or horse riders. The Dordogne department has a large number of All-Terrain-Biking trails that are (mostly) not for the faint of heart. |
